Jacob Whiteman

St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook. A heavily eroded sandstone tablet with shoulder tympanum top next to his wife’s rectangular marble tablet, not far from fellow veteran, John Stickle, toward the front and parking lot.

Jacob Whiteman’s father, Henrich Weidman was born in Switzerland and married Clavi Koch in New York in 1741. One of nine siblings, Jacob was baptised at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck in 1752 and his namesake, Jacob Maul, was one of the witnesses. He married Catherina Neher, daughter of Carl Neher and Anna Constantina Reichart. There are only two children known from this union, Anna Maria Weydman, baptised in 1782 (whose namesake was Anna Maria Schafer), and Henrich Weydman, baptised in 1779 (whose namesake was his grandfather). Both children were baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church of Reyn Beeck at Red Hook.
His wife Catherine died in 1814 and he followed in 1838. Her marble gravestone is still fairly legible, allowing us to find her husband’s eroded one beside her.
