Elmendorph Green Project

Thanks to a generous $160,000 matching gift, Historic Red Hook acquired the next-door property, 5 Cherry Street, in 2018. This was the first of three bold steps toward an expanded community meeting place for Red Hook.

Phase One

Since launching our Elmendorph Green Campaign in late 2018, we have:

  • Installed the ‘Elmendorph Green’ – a large lawn directly behind the inn

  • Renovated the first floor of 5 Cherry Street into the StoryStudio

  • Built a new parking lot behind the StoryStudio and handicapped parking next to the inn

  • Installed a bluestone walkway from the new parking lot to the Elmendorph Inn

  • Trimmed and cabled the majestic maple trees lining the Elmendorph Green

  • Presented two local history exhibits in the Story Studio - “Alexander Gilson: From Property to Property Owner” and “How About Them Apples!”

  • Celebrated the community with music, food and history in several public gatherings that have attracted audiences larger than ever before

That’s the good news! But we have more work to do, including:

  • Adding lighting for the new walkway

  • With the village of Red Hook, installing a new bluestone sidewalk and split rail fence along Cherry Street

  • Making the StoryStudio accessible to all, with physical and technological improvements
